hi readers!
my name is noella williams, and i am a brooklyn-based writer covering black culture, queer identity, fandoms, music, and veganism, among a long list of interests turned bylines. my work can be found in publications like teen vogue, vox, and uproxx. born and raised in the panhandle of florida, i credit my success to growing up in the south, and you can read more in my essay for the washington post. the rest of my work is available on my portfolio.
i’m currently writing the proposal for my debut book, misogynoir and multiverses: a black girl’s guide to fandom culture. the nonfiction essay collection spans the racism and sexism directed toward black women and femmes in the science fiction, fantasy, and comic book realms, identifying the hostile online and offline behavior within fandoms.
my book pays homage to my love for vampires, talking entirely too much, and scrolling tumblr as a teenager. in the rare moments that i’m offline, catch me listening to solange’s a seat at the table, rewatching interview with the vampire, or djing as eevee.
screaming into the void, but in lowercase was born in 2021 as an outlet for my throwaway thoughts, and nothing has really changed. this newsletter consists of recommendations, essays, interviews, a sneak peek of my book, and a lot of my lore. it was also featured on essence gu alongside other black women journalists!
journalism — and the entire media industry, in general — is in a really weird place right now, so you’re welcome (and encouraged!) to support and subscribe. <3
