in true pisces nature, my imagination has whisked me away to places i could only envision with a ripe bong hit and a willful intuition.
overflowing with motivation and the thrill of a three-hour journey on the peter pan bus, i worked on a rough outline for a comic con panel that sat in my google docs, untouched and unused for two years. the panel didn’t work out, so my slight discouragement—in combination with my disinterest in writing—led to a less fruitful year for my book.
as another creative endeavor, the draft for my book proposal was tucked away in the depths of my google drive. i didn’t work on it for at least a few months, but things changed after i was laid off from my job. i opened the individual chapters and allowed myself to fill a page or two with my thoughts on interview with the vampire or 2014 tumblr.
eventually, zeba blay’s writing workshop over last summer revived me. my cohort met weekly on sunday mornings, and it was grounding to be surrounded by other black women writers. my goal for the six-week workshop was to develop insight to expand on the vulnerable parts seeping out of my book’s introduction. and y’all…writing a book is hard!
all of that lore brings me to now—a moment that i am soooo excited to share.
i’m hosting a panel at this year’s dream con!
this is something i’ve mentioned in passing to friends, yapped to strangers, manifested, seen in my dreams, and it’s happening!!! the panel revolves around my forthcoming book, misogynoir and multiverse: a black girl’s guide to fandom culture.
i’m working on a nonfiction collection of essays about the racism and sexism directed toward black women in science fiction and fantasy media. watching sinners three times has ignited my flame to write a chapter about black vampires, and i can’t wait to chit chat with other former fanfiction writers turned media superstars!
if you’re attending dream con this year, join me in conversation with my bff ariyon dailey on friday, may 30 at 4-5 p.m. cst. oomfs and non-dream con irls—i’m going to try to livestream and record the panel for y’all!
otherwise, i am now entering my author era, so please respect my wishes and do not make plans with me because i will say yes!
yessss congratulations, friend 🥹!!!! this is so exciting!!
Yeah!!!!!
